I 2008 at IUCNs 4th World Conservation Congress in Barcelona Spain a motion on the conservation of sacred natural sites was proposed under the coordination of the IUCN Specialist group on Cultural and Spiritual Values of protected Areas. Motionen antogs med 99% stöd från alla icke-statliga organisationer och 97% stöd från alla regeringspartier som var närvarande vid konferensen och förvandlades till en resolution. The resolution now supports and mandates those working in conservation to act on the conservation of sacred natural sites.
