The Culture, Values and Conservation Project (CVCP) implemented by Fauna & Flora
International (FFI) in partnership with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) seeks to integrate the
cultural values of local people into the management plans of Rwenzori Mountains National
Park (RMNP) and Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda. An important lesson learnt to date
is that protected area managers can build local interest in and support for parks by
presenting protected areas as cultural entities, by sharing the right to attribute meaning and
value, and by demonstrating that protected areas conserve local as well as global values.
Sacred cultural sites are among the most important cultural values identified in the Rwenzori
Mountains; in Lake Mburo, it is the Ankole cow.
